As I look back on my life, the greatest positive influence was my Dad. The importance of God in all aspects of his life was an example for me as I grew up, and his dedication to Christ continues to impact my life as a father and grandfather as I strive to recognize God’s importance in my own life as well. It is my prayer that I will be a positive influence in my children and grandchildren’s lives and that they will continue the cycle of following Christ.
The most important change in my life as a father came when I accepted Jesus as my Savior when my children were very young. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life” John 3:16. I encourage fathers and grandfathers to be positive about their future as a leader in their family. There may be some of you reading this article that think you have been such a failure that you can never be the father that you should be.
However, that is not true in God’s eyes. He has said that He will forgive, forget, and give everyone a second opportunity if we will follow the instructions in 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
I am convinced that it is very difficult to be an effective father without God directing our lives, so I want to share this prayer that any father or grandfather can use as his own.
A Father’s Prayer
Heavenly Father I come to You in Jesus’ Name to pour out my heart to You and ask forgiveness for the failures that I have had in being the kind of husband and father that is best for my wife and children.
I realize that I need You to direct me to be the kind of father You want me to be. Develop in me the ability to “trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths” Proverbs 3:5-6.
Thank you that even when things look impossible, all things are possible with You. “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” Matthew 19:26.
From this time forward, I want my family life to be Bible centered. Show me all that I need to learn from Your Word to make this happen. I ask that You work in my children’s hearts and direct them to be accepting of my new Biblical approach to being a father or grandfather.
I give You thanks and praise in advance for all that You are going to do. I bring these requests in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
